memorial weekend 2013

I love 3-day weekends. I love that extra day to get ready for the week. Except now I am completely thrown off that it's Tuesday! But that is a good thing!

Our Memorial Day weekend was spent in Tulsa with Greg's family. Avery was an OUTSTANDING traveler, only fussed a couple of times on the drive and kept herself content with toys in her carseat. We spent lots of time hanging with family and laughing. We celebrated Scott's birthday and were able to see lots of Greg's extended family. Avery has grown so much since everyone has seen her.  Of course, a few highlights of the trip for Avery include: seeing Emily & Fischer {the Haus' dogs} and Sassy {Katy's cat}, climbing up and down stairs as much as she wanted, blowing bubbles, running around yelling 'hi' and 'bye' to everyone and getting LOTS of attention! Greg was able to play golf with his brothers and my sister-in-law gave me a facial at the salon she works at. It was so relaxing, I could've laid there for hours.

We had a great time and it was so nice to get away, even if it was a short time.

Happy Birthday, Scott!

Being cheesy on the stairs.

I cannot get over how big Avery looks in all of these pictures. In my mind, she is still just a tiny baby girl.

this week's mantra

Between a hectic/stressful week at work, a teething baby (with molars of all things), and a husband working overtime - - this quote is my mantra for the week.

When Avery is screaming out of pain, Greg is working late and I've had bad day at the office the only thing I can do is breath...take a deep breath and remember this, too, shall pass. I am looking forward to Memorial Day weekend in Tulsa with Greg's family. It will be nice to get away.

big girl, big world

Avery never ceases to amaze us with the adorable things she does. This past week she really thought she was doing big girl things. As I fed Avery a bottle and rocked her to sleep {yes, I still feed my 14-month old a bottle and give her lots of cuddles at night} I realized how big she is getting. Almost too long for me to hold like a little baby.

We couldn't be more proud of the big girl she is becoming. Her sweet, yet determined personality makes us laugh all day long!

Avery is 'cleaning' the windows!

Avery helped Mommy & Daddy vote!

Avery thought she was a big girl with the princess backpack Aunt Sissy brought her.

And Avery's favorite new thing is helping to 'water' the flowers. We are trying to teach her to be GENTLE with the flowers!

Oh yes, and we are learning to smell the flowers, too!

mothers day 2013

My mothers day {weekend} looked like this:

LOTS of playing outside!

Which resulted in a tuckered out baby!

Date night with Greg at Roja and then to see The Great Gatsby.

A Mother's Day tradition is to plant flowers with my mom!

On Sunday, Avery 'helped' me with laundry...

When Daddy got off work...

We went to our new favorite brunch spot...Louie's Wine Dive!

And as a gift to me, Avery 'mowed' the lawn! HA

I hope all of the Mothers I know and love had a wonderful day/weekend as well. With the perfect, spring weather - how could you not?

And a special thank you to Greg and Avery for the wonderful weekend. I can't wait to book my day at the spa as well!

too many crevices

New mommies - beware! Don't make the same mistake I did - which is buying a high chair strictly on looks alone. You WILL regret it.

When I registered for Avery's baby items, I was all about consistency. I wanted my stroller/car seat/highchair to match. I wanted my swing/bouncer/glider/pack n play to match. Sorry, it's just the OCD in me. Once Avery started eating baby food in her high chair, I knew I had made a mistake getting the matching piece to the stroller travel system...

This is the high chair we have now. Moderately priced. Cute and girly. One thing a new mommy wouldn't think about when glancing at this chair are 1) the material the fabric is 2) all of the little crevices/places to wipedown and clean off.

First off, the fabric on this chair is clothing-like fabric so you can't just 'wipe' in down. You also cannot put this piece in the washer..hand wash only. I have spent many nights crouched over the bath tub spot-cleaning. In addition to the fabric, there are so many tiny crevices that food gets stuck in. If you don't scrub this highchair every night, then you are doomed to have leftover food in areas that are impossible to clean.

The new highchair I want:

Everything about this chair screams basic and easy clean-up. Plus if baby #2 is a boy {at some point in the future} this chair could be used again. The only problem is the price. It's not a cheap chair. But I feel as though it would make clean-up so much easier every day.

For as much as you use a high chair, I now know how important it is to get something you like AND is functional. There are plenty of options are out there now-a-days. And once your baby becomes mobile, deep cleaning is almost a thing of the past. I'm lucky if I can get Avery's chair cleaned after dinner before another mess is made in the living room!

So the moral of the story: find something you like AND something that you feel will be easy to clean up.

purple rain

Okay, this May weather absolutely stinks! We had big plans to get yardwork done, go on a bike ride and grill...none of which happened due to the 40-50-ish degree weather. We still had a nice, little weekend though. Our family of three made the most of the rainy weather by eatings lot of {unhealthy} comfort food and catching up on our DVR.

As I looked through these photos I realized I dressed Avery in purple both Saturday and Sunday. What can I say, it's HER color. I love her in it. So purple clothing + rainy weekend = Purple Rain!

Friday Night was what I consider my ideal night at home. We tried a new pizza place called Ragazzi's. It was AMAZING. Of course, Greg wanted for Hawaiian and I opted for Pepperoni with hot sauce. So darn good. We will be back. After Avery went to sleep, we caught up on a couple of episodes of our favorite show right now - Grimm.

Saturday - Greg helped some friends move furniture while Avery and I hung out. Later in the afternoon we went to meet Parker Ryan, who was born to my good high-school friend, Sarah. He was so sweet. It's so hard to imagine Avery that little and it's only been a year! Since we were way out west, Greg wanted to check out the beer selection at Brix. We love that place. We would've stayed longer except it was busy because of the Kentucky Derby. We made out with a couple bottles of wine for me and way too much beer for my hubby... Oh and we watched Argo on Saturday night. Highly recommend! I forgot how much I enjoy watching movies. Currently our chalkboard wall in the basement has a list of movies to see. One down, 6 to go!

Avery and I decided to visit daddy at work on Sunday. Even though it was chilly, we strolled around for a couple of hours. Avery's favorite part was the aquarium and the gorillas. Greg was so happy we came to see him and after we left, Avery was saying 'daddy' every 5 minutes!

I am SO looking forward to next weekend - Mother's Day weekend! Happy Monday to my friends and family!

zucchini + tomato saute

Last summer, Greg and I went on a date to Bonefish Grill to get our bang bang shrimp fix. We left the restaurant talking about a delicious seasonal side dish we had with our meal: a squash + tomato side. It was simple and light, yet flavorful.

Fast forward to present day - I am still dreaming of this side dish. In an effort to try some new, healthier side dishes this spring, I decided to do some research and replicate it. Our family loved it! Avery even had her fair share!

I will definitely be making this again. It would pair well with some Italian dressing-marinated grilled chicken. {I made french dips last night to get rid of some hamburger buns!}. Make it for yourself and let me know what you think!

Zucchini + Squash + Tomato Saute
Serves 4

2 small zucchini, halved length wise, then sliced into half-moons
2 medium tomatoes, large dice

1 clove of garlic, minced
1 tablespoon olive oil

1 tablespoon butter
3 tablespoons parmesan cheese, grated

1 teapsoon basil, chiffonade
1/2 teaspoon pepper

1/2 teaspoon salt

In large skillet, saute zucchini, garlic and tomatoes in hot oil and butter for 5 minutes. Add parmesan, basil, salt and pepper. Stir to coat well. Serve hot.

What my kitchen looked like during dinner prep...LOL!
