1st birthday party

I thought as Avery finished up her nap it would be a good time to post photos from her birthday party last weekend {plus I am avoiding the heaping piles of laundry in the basement}.

Greg and I threw a birthday party for Avery last Saturday. It was mostly family and we chose to invite just a few close friends. Less people = less stress on Mommy + less food to prepare + less of a chance for Avery being overwhelmed with too many faces. A few days before the party, I came down with a sinus infection and felt horrible. Perfect timing, right? So I was especially glad that we kept the number of guests down. My only regret was that we didn't do the taco bar we talked about. It would've made for less clean-up and prep work. Oh well!

We had a wonderful day. Avery enjoyed all of her new toys and especially loved the two boys that attended the party - Andrew and Ryker. It was so cute to watch Ryker and Avery play. We had a great group of people at the house. We are, as always, so thankful for the friends and family in our lives. However, I am unsure if we will be able to use our house as a birthday party venue next year - it was hard to hold everyone! Maybe we will hope for actual spring weather for the big 2! :)

neeew dooo

Go me! I took the plunge and decided to chop off another 3 inches of my hair. I had been contemplating doing it since January and finally decided what the heck, might as well! Greg was a big contributor to this idea. Every time I came home from the salon he'd be disappointed I didn't go shorter.

Besides missing my sock bun, I really do love it. It looks more professional and it has more of a style. This spring weather (sort-of) has got me changin' up all sorts of stuff!

Greg was giving me crap that I wasn't smiling in this picture, but 1) I was ATTEMPTING to be artsy and 2) I had/have a sinus infection and felt like POOP.

To Avery,  last Thursday was just like any other day plus the gifts, cupcake and fancy outfit. But to everyone else it was a VERY important day as we celebrated the first birthday of our sweet Avery James {yes, her middle name is not James, it is Elizabeth but I call her that because she reminds me so much of her daddy and his middle name is James}.

Her day was filled with celebrations wherever she went. At Nanna's they had a full day of partying that included cupcakes, singing, necklaces and princess dresses. We came home and opened gifts, grilled out, went on a walk {beautiful weather} and started assembling the house for Avery's birthday party.

As Greg and I laid in bed, we reflected on exactly what we were doing a year ago: laying in the hospital, exhausted from a day of labor, seeing our baby girl take her first surreal. Can't believe it's been a year. Who would've thought that on our honeymoon we'd get pregnant? Wow, didn't see that one coming. And yet, I feel like the luckiest girl on Earth.

Avery has brought so much joy to our lives. She is the best surprise that God could've given us.

Here are some pictures of her special day:

the big ONE!

Dearest Avery,

As I write this post, I have the biggest smile on my face. We made it one year - one year! It's gone so fast and yet it seems like you've been a part of our lives forever. You are the first thing that enters my mind when I wake up and when you are away from me I can't stop looking at your photos and videos. They make me laugh so much.

You think you are such a little lady already. I blame daycare on that and seeing all of the 'big kids' playing. You want to do everything they do and you are learning so quick! You LOVE to dance and sing to music. Your favorite things to sing/dance to are: your big dog toy when you touch it's nose it plays music, when mommy sings 'if all the raindrops' (you join in and do the 'ah ah ah' part!), and if you hear a catchy tune on a commercial.

Your newest discoveries are: doing ring-around-rosie (you know when to fall at the end and are so proud of yourself that you clap), TWIRLING around like a princess (it melts my heart to see), balls - they are your newest obsession, dogs (you find the dogs in all of your animal books and point and say 'dawh'), walking SO fast now it's almost becoming a run (it scares mommy but makes daddy laugh), brushing your hair and everyone else's (you yell 'DAD' when you want to brush his hair) and you know when daddy leaves for work to say 'bah bye dah' and wave and look out the window!

So far you only have 2 teeth - what the heck!? I swear that 4 more have been coming in for months...but that doesn't stop you from eating table food! You now prefer to eat table food over baby food. In fact, you get frustrated when you can't pick up your food on your own with your fingers. Your favorite foods are: bananas, shredded cheese, ravioli, grilled cheese, mango and chicken fettuccine (according to Nanna). You are a great eater and there isn't much you don't like. You love your sippy cup and are still working on holding your big girl cup. You have tried cows milk and didn't seem to mind it!

Your favorite things to do right now are: throw the ball around, go outside on walks, give BIG hugs and pats on the back, 'read' books, be chased around by daddy and dance. I must add that you LOVE dogs. You go to the window to watch for dogs. When you see one, you point and say 'woo woo' for woof woof. Everything is a dog, no matter which animal I point to in a book. :)

Luckily for us, you still take 2 naps: one in the morning at 10:00 and another at 2:00. We give you a bath around 8:00 and you are in bed at 8:30 and usually sleep until about 7:30. You usually need your paci to fall asleep and do a great job at soothing yourself back to sleep or keeping yourself content in crib when you wake up.

You comfort object is Lenny the lemur. You love Len. You sleep with him and carry him around in the morning when you first wake up. However, Lenny stays in your room - we don't drag him around places. Your bottle is also a comfort object, in my opinion. A little nervous about taking that away....

Daddy and I are loving how your personality continues to shine. You are very busy and are always trying to figure out how things work. You are still inquisitive about the world around you. You get shy around people you aren't sure of. You LOVE Nanna and prefer to say Nanna over momma now! You understand most all commands, such as 'give mommy the ball', 'let's go take a bath', 'put that back', 'look what I have in my hand', 'throw the ball to mommy', 'where did daddy go'. We think she is so, so smart :)

You are long and skinny (exactly 20 pounds) and have a big outie bellybutton. Daddy is so worried about that bellybutton - he knows you will hate it when you get older! Even though you got tubes last month, you already have an ear infection. We are hoping it's just a fluke.

I am so excited to see what this next year holds. This past year has been one of the best of my entire life. Watching you grow and learn and seeing how much your daddy loves you makes my heart happy. You are our pride and joy and simply irreplaceable.

We love you to the moon and back!

2 dates, one weekend.

For the first time in over a year, Greg and I had a weekend entirely to ourselves. At first it felt strange but we quickly decided to take advantage of it. Who knows when the next kid-free weekend will be! My parents offered to take Avery for the weekend so she stayed in Lincoln until Sunday.

Friday night we decided to dine at Bonefish and see Oz. One of my favorite things EVER is seeing a movie on opening night. But, Greg, not so much. He thinks the movie theater chairs are uncomfortable. He was a good sport, though, and agreed to go. Dinner was yummy and the movie was awesome. As we left the theater it was chilly and raining - my perfect kind of night.

LOVIN Charlie!

Pecan Parmesan Trout - love Bonefish.

On Saturday, Greg and I spent the entire day cleaning the house. For all those with little ones, you know how difficult it is to keep a house clean. Even maintaining it proves to be a challenge. We scrubbed, sanitized, organized, dusted and vacuumed. It got to be about 5:00 and we were pondering what do that night. I suggested going on a 'cheap' date. {the evening before Greg was having a fit that we spent so much on dinner...} So we decided to share nachos a tex-mex restaurant down the road and see a movie at the $3 theater. We were in heaven! Although the sound and picture quality wasn't amazing, the theater was packed {and saw This is 40 again} and Greg loved that these 'old school' seats were comfy. Score! We left the movie again with it raining/sleeting. Another perfect night with my husband.

We woke up to snow, ice, wind and a time change! Thankfully my parents brought back Avery safe and sound. We spent the afternoon playing and cozying up. Even though I loved spending time with just Greg, we missed our baby and hearing her little feet patter on the floor and her voice yelling 'Dad' around the house. She is truly amazing.

Cuddling in Grandpa & Grandma's bed.

Having her back in my arms feels so good!

This will be a busy week for us - celebrating Avery's 1st birthday on Thursday and prepping for her party on Saturday and the company that is attending. Fun times for sure!

maroon fine, i mean five!

Last night we attended the Maroon 5 concert. Good lord, Adam Levine is incredibly gorgeous. He is my new celebrity crush. And I feel like a 13 year old as I write this! What an amazing show - I now understand why it was sold out. However, Sunday night concerts = long Mondays.

Today Avery is home with a little stomach bug. Even though she is not 100% she is still her happy, playful self! :)

A little light reading at Von Maur

Lunch at Panera with Mimi and Aunt Katy

Dinner at Michael's before the concert.

LOVES playing with all her shoes!

miss independent

I have noticed over the last few weeks that Avery is becoming more and more independent through both her actions and words. For instance, a few nights ago she was walking as fast as her little legs could carry her to the bathroom. I knew what she was going for - the toilet lid.   So I quickly grabbed her hand to guide her away from the bathroom. She batted my hand away and with a serious frown on her face said, 'noh noh NOHHHH'! {which is code for 'no, no no'}. Alright sassy pants, I get the picture!

Avery also wants to feed herself, which results in a HUGE mess. She will get so frustrated when I feed her and will bat away the spoon until I give her it. Then she insists on putting the spoon in the food and 'eating'. Even though she isn't really getting anything on the spoon I guess it's a good thing that she has the motivation to do things on her own.

From eating, to playing, to brushing everyone's hair {hers, mine, and Lenny's} Miss Avery is now Miss Independent for sure!

Ok so this NEVER happens - Avery sitting on my lap watching TV. {Baby Mozart to be exact}. If you think I'm kidding you should come visit some night. This baby doesn't sit still!
