Baby Food

My sister-in-law, Megan, gave me a how-to book on making baby food for Christmas last year. At the time, I though it would be forever until I'd have to worry about feeding Avery solid foods. Well, forever is here and it's time to start doing my homework on how to make homemade baby food. I have 2 friends that make their baby's food and they have said it's actually not as strenuous as it sounds, just takes some prep and planning.

We've already started on rice cereal and won't begin veggies for another month probably, but I'm beginning to prepare myself for sticky hands, smelly diapers, a baby bullet, and lots of ice trays full of puree in the freezer :)

Little Sidekick

On Friday our friend's, The Blakes, had their reveal party. Going to one made me wish we would've listened to my mom's suggestion and done one. Nothing better than being surrounded by your closest family and friends to 'reveal' the gender of your baby. It was a happy event and a good excuse to get everyone under the same roof to catch up and party.  Jake and Jess found out they were having a boy! In the words of Greg, "Another one I have to keep away from Avery!" HA.

Jess holding my baby girl. She will make one good momma.

Avery was my little helper on Saturday as we ran errands, painted the remaining stripes in the basement, cleaned and folded laundry and finalized our paint color for the upstairs. I love my weekends with her. She is my little sidekick :)

Learning to sit on her own!

Our basement/toy room. It's coming along.

Yesterday my parent's came up to pick out some bedroom furniture at Nebraska Furniture Mart. They left with furniture AND a new iPad for my mom! Greg, Avery and I walked around with them for awhile while they browsed.

Avery is so into touching hair, cheeks, noses and mouths now.

We ended the weekend with grilling, some wine and the Olympics. Happy Monday, all.

If this doesn't make you happy, I don't know what does. Greg found a new ticklish spot on Avery :)

Colorado 2012

As we entered mountain country last Wednesday, I couldn't help but watch Greg intently look out the window as we drove. The trees, the air, the wildlife. It was as if it was calling his name. When he saw a father and son fly fishing he'd say, "Someday that will be me and Avery!". When we saw a group of hikers about to leave he'd exclaim, "If we lived here we could do that all the time." My husband: the adventurist, the animal lover, the nature guru. And that's why I love him - he brings out a side of me that I didn't really know I had. When I see his passion for nature and the outdoors, it makes me appreciate it, too.

Our trip to Colorado was nothing short of amazing. We jam packed the long with weekend with activities until the day we left. On Wednesday, we got up early and drove out there. The trip went fast, we made our usual stop at Ole's in Paxton for lunch and got to our cabin in the early evening. After we unpacked my dad & I ran in to town to get groceries, my mom played with Avery and Jon, Greg and Kristin went on a hike.

Thursday we got up early to prepare for white water rafting! My mom had told me awhile ago that she would stay back with Avery if I wanted to go - and of course I accepted the offer. We drove on a school bus for a little over an hour until we got the Poudre River. With the little rain and snow they had from the winter, the river was extremely shallow and not very 'rapidy'. Our guide reassured us that is would still be fun, which it was. We saw some parts of the mountains destroyed from the forest fires. It was saddening, tall trees burnt to a crisp. We didn't return to the cabin until late in the afternoon so we all took a power nap, showered and made our way to downtown Estes for some shopping.

Friday was the big day that Greg had been dreaming about: hiking. Once again we got up early to hike to Gem Lake. Although it was only a 4-mile hike, we were hiking up a mountain and climbing over rocks. It was pretty darn intense. After the hike, we drove into Rocky Mountain National Park. We parked and hiked to the Lake Lawn Dam. We also took the scenic route up the mountain to the tundra (where the altitude is so high trees don't grow - 12,000 feet). We were all so exhausted from the busy day that everyone was in bed by 10:30.

Although we were all sore, we used Saturday as a day to cross off our last must-do's before leaving. We went and toured the Stanley Hotel - which is where parts of The Shining and Dumb & Dumber were filmed. The hotel is supposedly haunted and my mom, sis & I love ghost stuff. Next time I WILL go on the ghost tour! Greg and Jon really wanted to check out the Estes Park Brewery so we stopped there. We then had lunch at an awesome BBQ joint and went home and got ready to go to church. That evening we all agreed to just put on pj's and relax. We had a low-key evening of dominos and drinks.

When Sunday rolled around we were all bummed to leave and go back to reality. The trip was so refreshing and picturesque. Greg is determined to live out there someday and I would have no problem with that. That state truly is beautiful.

I have to brag a little about Avery before the pictures begin. My baby did absolutely amazing on trip. From the car rides to the altitude change to sleeping in her pack n' play to chilly baths (had to sit her in her bumbo and it was chilly). I have to say my favorite part about our hike was how happy Avery was. She didn't make a peep - soaked in all her surroundings. Everytime I looked back at her  (Greg wore the Baby Bjorn) she looked at me with the biggest smile. She LOVES the outdoors, kind of like somebody else I know...her daddy :)

What's New

I haven't had a ton of time to blog this past week but here is what's been up at the Haus House lately:

Avery had her 4-month doctor's appointment last Thursday. Greg & I both attended her appointment (God forbid either of us miss something!). Poor baby had to get shots, but she was a brave girl and cried for about 10 seconds and was back to her happy self. I will have to blog about Avery at 4 months once I get some more time. But overall her appointment went great.

Mimi and P Pa (not sure if he's decided that's his name yet!) came for a long weekend to visit us! We shopped, played and dined.

Avery had rice cereal for the first time! Most of went around her mouth and onto her bib but it's a start.

Greg's parents gladly watched Avery so I could go swimming with Sara for a few hours. It was the first time this summer that I went to the pool all by myself and felt great :)

Greg and I snuck away for a date Saturday night to one of our favorites, Bonefish Grill. I had the Dory Monaco and Greg had scallops...heaven on a plate.

Avery and I goofed around on Sunday together. It is just way too hot to do anything outside with baby...
Later this week we are going to Colorado with my family - I am soooo looking forward to getting away!

GC Dip

Anybody else obsessed with Granite City, specifically the dip that goes with the waffle fries?! I know I am! Greg and I usually make 'healthy fries' as we call them as a dinner side and last night I was really craving the dip. Sooo I found a recipe online that I tried - and it was dead on! All of the ingredients we had in our kitchen, too. Try it out for yourself!

Granite City Dip
1 cup sour cream
1/2 cup mayo
1/4 tsp onion powder
1/4 tsp garlic salt
1/4 tsp curry
1/8 tsp paprika
1/4 tsp worcestershire sauce

Combine all ingredients and top with parsley flakes. The recipe forewarns not to use low fat sour cream or mayo (which of course wasn't a problem for us - HA).

The 4th & Rupert

I'm not a huge fan of having the 4th on a Wednesday - makes today feel like a Monday! Yuck!

Greg, Avery & I went down to the Wagner's lake-house yesterday for the afternoon/evening.  This 4th was much different than others now that we have Avery. It wasn't as easy to throw a quick bag together and drive on down. Instead we packed 5 bags and took a good couple of hours to get going. Hopefully in time we will get this packing/traveling thing down to a science. We were so busy with Avery that we really didn't even have time to drink! A strange occurrence on a holiday such as the 4th.

In addition to the holiday this week we also agreed to watch our friends' dog, Rupert. Rupert is a 5-pound yorkie and is the sweetest little thing. Doesn't shed, doesn't bark, hasn't had an accident in the house, goes in his kennel at night and best of all - LOVES Avery. I'm not kidding. This doggie has to be right next to Avery when she is playing, he sits at her door if she makes a peep, watches her eat and peeks on her if she's napping in her glider. It's the cutest thing I've seen in a long time. I've been having fun taking pictures of the things they do together :)

Here are some pictures from the week:

Found this pumpkin in the guest room as I was cleaning and Avery was fascinated with it. Initially she'd look at it and turn her head away real fast. She did that about 4 times before she really started staring.

Learning to grab toys with both hands at a time and pull.

I needed to change so I let Avery watch my favorite show - Real Housewives of Beverly Hills. I think she liked it :)

First time in her high chair! Momma even put it together herself!

When Avery eats, Rupert wants to be nearby.

When Avery bathes, Rupert wants to watch what's going on.

Starting to get the hang of her new seat! Yay!

When Avery plays, Rupert joins in on the fun!

I made oreo balls for the 4th and everytime I turned on the blender, Avery & Rupert simultaneously stopped what they were doing and gave me a look of terror.

When Avery takes a siesta, Rupert is nearby doing the same thing.

When it's playtime, Rupert makes sure Avery is okay.

Recipe & Mom Cut?!

Maybe it's just the heat but I have really been debating whether or not to cut my hair off. I told myself that I wouldn't get a 'mom hair cut' but for time sake in the mornings, it would sure be nice to have a little less to work with. This decision isn't an easy one for me, though. It has taken me over 5 years to grow my hair out to the length it is now. Before I do anything rash, I really need to think about this decision. Here is what my hair looked like about 5 years ago - I thought it was really cute! And of course back then I wanted long hair sooo bad. Now that I have it I kind of want my short hair back! The grass always seems to be greener on the other side! :)

On another note, the other night I made a recipe I found on Pinterest called Slow Cooker Salsa Chicken. Anything I can throw into the crockpot in the morning and is ready to eat by dinner time is my kind of meal! Anyways, I've decided it's one of our new 'go-to' recipes - it was amazing! Greg even said, "Mmmmm this is delicious, can you make that again soon?"
